Workshop on From Concept to Lab Bench
Day 1 – Advanced Formulation Design & Preformulation Science
Focus: Dosage form strategy, excipient selection, and analytical understanding
Session 1: Introduction to Formulation Science
- Role of formulation scientist in product lifecycle
- Types of dosage forms & their design logic
- Route-based formulation choices (oral, topical, parenteral)
Session 2: Excipient Selection & Functional Attributes
- Overview of excipients (binders, disintegrants, gelling agents, emulsifiers)
- Selecting excipients for stability, release, and patient compliance
- Common incompatibilities
Session 3: Preformulation Studies & Analytical Tools
- Solubility, pKa, LogP, partition coefficient
- Solid-state characterization: FTIR, DSC, XRPD, TGA
- Case studies: formulation failure due to poor preformulation
Day 2 – QbD Foundations & Risk-Based Development
Focus: Implementing structured formulation thinking using ICH principles
Session 1: Introduction to QbD & Regulatory Framework
- ICH Q8 to Q11 simplified
- Defining QTPP, CQA, CMA, CPP
- Mapping formulation objectives to outcomes
Session 2: Risk Assessment – Fishbone & FMEA
- How to construct and interpret Fishbone Diagrams
- Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Identifying high-risk variables in student/research projects
Session 3: Case-Based QbD Interpretation
- Group activity/demo: Building QTPP–CQA chains
- Using QbD to redesign a poorly structured formulation
- Common QbD mistakes and how to avoid them
Day 3 – Design of Experiments (DoE) & Design Space
Focus: Scientific optimization and statistical design thinking
Session 1: Fundamentals of DoE
- Key terms: factor, level, response, interaction
- Full factorial vs. central composite designs
- How DoE improves formulation success rate
Session 2: Software-Based DoE Demonstration
- Intro to Design Expert / Excel-based DoE setup
- Creating a DoE matrix and choosing experimental runs
- Real example: DoE on emulsion or gel formulation
Session 3: Design Space & Interpretation
- Contour plots, response surface methodology (RSM)
- Identifying design space and working limits
- Summary of outputs and critical interpretation
Day 4 – Formulation Trials, Evaluation & Scientific Reporting
Focus: Translating plan to lab trial, analyzing results, and reporting scientifically
Session 1: Trial Design & Lab Readiness
- How to write a trial protocol
- Batch size, scaling logic, and lab safety
- In-process checks: mixing time, temperature, pH
Session 2: Evaluation Techniques
- Physical parameters: viscosity, spreadability, pH, etc.
- Chemical: drug content, entrapment efficiency
- Overview of Franz diffusion cell, release testing
Session 3: Scientific Report Writing & Rubrics
- Format of academic/research project reports
- Avoiding plagiarism, referencing styles (APA/Vancouver)
- Faculty rubrics for project grading and viva
Day 5 – Intellectual Property, Patent Filing & Innovation Strategy
Focus: Protecting ideas and turning research into academic innovation
Session 1: Understanding Patents in Pharma
- What is patentable: product, process, delivery system
- Criteria: Novelty, Inventive Step, Industrial Applicability
- Case examples of formulation patents in India
Session 2: Patent Filing Process & Documentation
- Indian patent forms: 1, 2, 3, 5, 18
- How to write a simple patent claim
- Using Indian Patent Search (InPASS) & Google Patents
Session 3: Institutional Strategy & Innovation Ecosystem
- How colleges can support IPR
- MoUs, tech transfer, and startup links
- Patent support schemes (MSME, Atal Incubation, TIFAC)
